Life in the floodplain

Floodplains offer a multitude of habitats due to their constantly varying water level - there are dry terrestrial, wet semi aquatic and aquatic habitats where the most diverse animal and plant species occur. This is exactly why floodplain landscapes are of particular ecological importance; due to their abundance of species, they are real hotspots of biodiversity.

Such a habitat mosaic can also be found in the Lippe floodplain (Lippeaue), which offers  suitable habitats to many indigenous animals and plants. Among them are very rare species and habitats. Additionally, many species and habitats which are worth protecting on a district and nationwide level are still present in the project area.
